Guildhawk unveils new uniform to honour human translators in the AI era

This week, Geoff Hinton, the ‘Godfather of AI’ warned that AI will result in “massive unemployment and a huge rise in profits,” as he and other AI leaders call for a ban on ‘superintelligence’, that could outthink humans.

To promote the powerful role translators and other skilled professionals continue to play in the fast-evolving age of super-smart AI translation, Guildhawk posed a bold question:

How do you evidence what it means to be a skilled artist in the age of AI models?

To answer this, they didn’t turn to code or translations, they turned to craft.

Guildhawk challenged two master artisans, Russell Howarth, a bespoke London tailor of rare precision, and Toni Evans, a young goldsmith whose creations speak in gold, to create an iconic uniform that would symbolise the enduring power of the human translator.

As Guildhawk prepares to celebrate 25 years delivering language solutions for global organisations, the artists took inspiration from the company’s own award-winning AI software, GAI Translate. Specifically, the female space captain avatar; the futuristic star of Guildhawk’s entirely AI-generated film introducing the GAI products.

The captain represents the pioneering spirit behind the GAI technology that creates a powerful self-service translation solution with human expertise. Developed in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University with backing from the UK government, it empowers subscribers to get AI results verified by one of Guildhawk’s vetted linguists in one-click.

The challenge

Toni and Russell were challenged to take the design of the AI-generated space captain uniform and transform this into a real-world product of the highest quality using the very best of human expertise, supported by the latest design technology.

To guarantee the story of the company’s transition from traditional language services to a pioneer in AI translation was woven into every detail, Toni and Russell worked closely with Guildhawk’s female founder Jurga Zilinskiene MBE, who is both a linguist and coder.

The creative magic and technical precision they achieved in the final product was sensational and is now showcased on Getty Images.

Fashioning the Translation Brigade

Unveiled at Since Wang’s Fashion Crossover at Home House for London Fashion Week, the hussar styled tunic stunned audiences. Made from striking orange velvet, trimmed with gold braid, and adorned with exquisitely handmade gold buttons featuring the GAI Translate logo and bees, it was more than fashion, it was a manifesto.

The bees, symbols of diligence and interdependence in nature, echoed the translator’s role: tirelessly working to connect worlds, cultures, and hearts with language.

Technology Inspires. Humanity Creates.

AI tools like 3D modelling and digital rendering played a role in visualising how the uniform of the computer-generated image of the GAI Translate captain could look in real form.

Russell says,

“The uniform worn by the digital captain helped imagine the silhouette, simulate the textures, and preview the final look. But they were only the beginning.”

The true artistry began when human hands took over. Russell created precise measurements, prepared the patterns, hand-cut the cloth, feeling its weight and flow, shaping it to move with elegance and purpose.

Meanwhile, Toni turned pencil sketches into intricate digital drawings of the ball buttons, called the ‘Code to Life’, with their bees, busy at work on a neural network. Each one unique, they symbolise nature’s preservation of life on earth, the fragility of our ecosystem and its new relationship with man-made large and small language models language like those that power GAI Translate.

3D printed in wax, replacing the ancient method of carving, they were then cast in molten metal, finished, plated in gold then polished until they gleamed with life.

Toni says,

“3D modelling helps the artist bring imaginations to life but since the dawn of civilisation, it is the skill of the human hand and soul that brings beauty into being.”

Sporting this beautiful uniform on the catwalk, GAI Translate CEO, coder and linguist, Jurga Zilinskiene MBE said,

“The GAI uniform and its coding bees, is the essence of human craftsmanship. The ability to transform inspiration into emotionally resonant reality.” Adding,

“Just as a translator doesn’t merely swap words between languages, but interprets meaning, culture, and tone, the artisan doesn’t just assemble materials, they infuse them with soul.”

The Translator, the Tailor, and the Goldsmith

In this uniform, the worlds of tailoring, goldsmithing, and translation converge.

  • The tailor sculpts fabric like a translator shapes language, each cut deliberate, each seam a connection.
  • The goldsmith refines raw material into beauty, just as a translator polishes meaning until it shines.
  • And the translator, like both artisans, brings humanity to the process, ensuring that what is created is not just accurate, but alive.

The GAI captain’s uniform is a symbol that human translation will never go out of fashion. It celebrates the irreplaceable role of the linguists’ mind and spirit in a world increasingly guided by AI models trained to be like them.

Guildhawk’s vision was not just to make something of astonishing beauty. It was to create a physical form with deep meaning. And through the hands of Russell Howarth and Toni Evans, they did just that, a golden tribute to the timeless power of human expression.

Geoff Hinton may be right to fear that ‘superintelligence’ will one day outthink people, but we must remember, AI will never possess the soul of the human artist.
